Welcome to a new term, and a new year! Come and welcome the new year by visiting us tomorrow at @dmuleicester’s Open Day, where you can chat to Bethany Layne and Joe Phelan about our #DMUEnglish course. #DMUOpenDay #DMUEnglishModules
To the students we talked to at today’s #DMUOpenDay about our areas of specialism, you may like to check out the hashtag #dmuenglishmodules
Come join us at the next @dmuleicester Open Day this Saturday, 15 September, and see what makes our English course unique. A reminder too that we featured our English team and modules via the hashtags #DMUEnglish #MeetTheTeam #DMUEnglishModules https://t.co/I0daSOg91x
The module also focuses on women authors, screenwriters and directors. It questions why there are so few women working in the film & television industries, and examines successful women screenwriters (Lynne Ramsay, Jane Goldman, Diablo Cody, Shawn Slovo, etc). #DMUEnglishModules

As well as developing creative adaptation skills, the module also focuses on a number of theoretical approaches, including power, class, race, & nationality. A strong theme of the module concerns female characters and how these change in the adaptation process. #DMUEnglishModules

Students are introduced to the industrial practitioner aspects of adapting source materials, and also gain some invaluable experience in producing screenplays. The module begins with training in screenplay presentation & using basic screenwriting software. #DMUEnglishModules

We’re finishing our #DMUEnglishModules tweets with ENGL3102: Writing Adaptations! This third-year module develops theories of #adaptation studies, focusing on a variety of remediations of literature, plays, poetry, myth, fairy tales, comic books, graphic novels & computer games.

Classes focus on radical texts & their equally ground-breaking film/graphic novel adaptations, such as Virginia Woolf’s #Orlando, Allen Ginsberg’s #Howl, Christos Tsiolkas’s #Loaded, Joan Lindsay’s #PicnicAtHangingRock, & Jeffrey Eugenides’s #TheVirginSuicides. #DMUEnglishModules

As part of this module, there is an optional #DMUGlobal field trip to the Electronic Textual Cultures Lab at the University of Victoria on Vancouver Island in Canada, which students have enjoyed immensely in the past as there is plenty of time for sightseeing! #DMUEnglishModules

#DMUEnglishModules ENGL2035: Text Technologies: This popular second-year module offers students some hand-on experience in studying #DigitalHumanities by examining how technologies of writing have shaped literature and what we read.

#DMUEnglishModules: Before we introduce some of our #DigitalHumanities modules later on today and throughout this week, have a look at DMU English Professor, Gabriel Egan, explaining in this video, ‘What are the Digital Humanities?’ https://t.co/CuuuqFvSso
Students also have the fun and hands-on option to adapt a text themselves. In the past, students have written song/poem adaptations of Romeo and Juliet, devised scripts for Western & Sci-fi versions of Shakespeare, or turned Jane Eyre into a board-game! #DMUEnglishModules

By examining adaptations of texts such as #RomeoAndJuliet, #JaneEyre, #WutheringHeights & #TheTurnOfTheScrew, students study the practical industrial motivations for adapting English literature and how this affects how we culturally 'remember' classic stories. #DMUEnglishModules

This module looks at adaptation from a creative & cultural perspective, exploring contexts such as 1960s counter-culture, war film & political fiction, ‘teen Shakespeare’, classic Hollywood cinema, the 1990s rise of #MTV, fantasy & romance fiction genres, etc. #DMUEnglishModules

#DMUEnglishModules ENGL2019: Screen & Literary Adaptations of the Classics: This is our second-year #adaptation module, in which students explore in an in-depth manner how classic literature has been adapted in film, television and popular fiction from the 1930s to the present...

#DMUEnglishModules ENGL1013: Introduction to Drama: Shakespeare: This is our core first-year module, which alongside introducing students to the study of Drama and Shakespearean works, also has 2 sections on #adaptation and some course engagement with #digitalhumanities.

In a previous year, students were also lucky enough to meet and talk to the author @KateForsyth, whose book, Bitter Greens, is studied in term 2 – we hope to invite her again! https://t.co/MHcAyoAAkw … #DMUEnglishModules

In Term 2, students delve deeper into different kinds of adaptations, such as Disney & literary adaptations of fairy tales (Tangled, anyone?), and film and novel adaptations of classic literature by Virginia Woolf and Charles Dickens. #DMUEnglishModules

#DMUEnglishModules ENGL1009: Introduction to English & Adaptation: In this first-year module, students are introduced to key English writing & communication skills, alongside the study of adaptations – one of our unique areas of expertise at #DMUEnglish...
