Happy 99th Birthday to Jimmy Carter! In 1979, President Carter responded to efforts by descendants of #DrMudd to have his conviction overturned. Carter replied there was no remedy since Mudd had accepted a pardon. However, he did express his own opinion doubting Dr. Mudd’s guilt.

#OTD Dec. 23, 1864: #DrMudd travelled to D.C. & met up with #JohnWilkesBooth. Mudd introduced JWB to #JohnSurratt who was walking down Pennsylvania Ave. with Louis Weichmann. The four men retired to JWB’s hotel room where JWB recruited Surratt into his plot to kidnap Lincoln.

#OTD Dec. 20, 1864: #DrMudd celebrated his 31st birthday by riding into Bryantown with #JohnWilkesBooth. The pair went to Peter Trotter’s blacksmith shop so JWB could get horseshoes for his newly purchased horse. Mudd likely had JWB as a birthday sleepover guest #OTD as well.
#OTD Dec. 19, 1864: #JohnWilkesBooth, who had spent the night at #DrMudd’s, purchased a one eyed horse from George Gardiner who lived next door to the @DrMuddHouse. On the night of Lincoln’s assassination, this horse was ridden by #LewisPowell.
#OTD Dec. 18, 1864: #JohnWilkesBooth met #DrMudd at the Bryantown Tavern. There, Mudd introduced JWB to Confederate agent Thomas Harbin. JWB attempted to recruit Harbin into his plot to kidnap Lincoln. That night, JWB spent the night at the @DrMuddHouse.
#OTD Dec. 5, 1865: Lt. John Toffey wrote a letter requesting a portion of reward money. Early on 4/15, Toffey overtook a riderless horse which turned out to be the one-eyed horse JWB purchased from #DrMudd’s neighbor which was used by #LewisPowell. Toffey was denied reward money.
#OTD Dec. 3, 1867: #DrMudd, #SamuelArnold, & #EdmanSpangler, still imprisoned at @DryTortugasNPS, were interviewed regarding their involvement. A congressional committee angry with Johnson’s amnesty measures hoped the conspirators had dirt on Confederate leaders. They didn’t.

#OTD Nov. 18, 1885: Thomas Harbin died at 52. Harbin was a Confederate mail agent in MD & was introduced to #JohnWilkesBooth by #DrMudd. Harbin agreed to help with JWB’s abduction plot, if Lincoln was brought to SoMD. In 1865, Harbin helped JWB when he escaped into Virginia.
Conspirator #SamuelArnold would later state to authorities that #JohnWilkesBooth received two letters for introduction from Patrick Martin in Canada. One was for Dr. Queen while the other was for #DrMudd. Mudd was involved in underground Confederate activities.
#OTD Nov. 13, 1864: #JohnWilkesBooth celebrated his brother’s birthday by meeting #DrMudd for the first time. JWB went with Dr. Queen’s family to church at St. Mary’s Bryantown where Mudd happened to visit that Sunday, despite it not being his home church.
#OTD Oct. 17, 1899: Frederick Stone, the attorney who represented #DavidHerold & co-counsel for #DrMudd at the trial of the conspirators, died at the age of 79. Stone served as a US Representative & judge in SoMD. He also reflected on the difficulty he had representing Dr. Mudd.
#DrMudd spent a lot of time woodworking while imprisoned at Fort Jefferson. Both the @DrMuddHouse & @ACWMuseum have cribbage boards he made during that time. Here’s yet another that he gifted to Jacob D. Rogers, an engineer who oversaw the water condensers at @DryTortugasNPS.
#DrMudd interesting. Arnold recalls that both men denied any connection to JWB. He then states his own belief that Spangler had nothing to do with it. But when it came to Mudd, Arnold was more like 🤷♂️ . IMO, it’s telling that Arnold didn’t really defend Mudd like he did Spangler.
