#OTD Dec. 3, 1867: #DrMudd, #SamuelArnold, & #EdmanSpangler, still imprisoned at @DryTortugasNPS, were interviewed regarding their involvement. A congressional committee angry with Johnson’s amnesty measures hoped the conspirators had dirt on Confederate leaders. They didn’t.

Lot 13 in my auction is a vial of sand and some shells from Fort Jefferson, Dry Tortugas. The current bid is only $15 for these samples of the island prison that held conspirators #DrMudd, #SamuelArnold, #MichaelOLaughlen, & #EdmanSpangler: https://t.co/HRQzvrqyBX

#OTD Aug. 10, 1825: #EdmanSpangler was born in York, PA. As a carpenter, Ned helped to construct the Booth home of @SpiritsTH & then worked for John T. Ford in Baltimore & @fordstheatre. While within the orbit of #JohnWilkesBooth, most consider Ned to have been innocent.

#OTD July 29, 1858: Future @fordstheatre stagehand #EdmanSpangler married Mary Brasheare. Their marriage was a short one, however, as Mary died at the age of 49 six years later. The @DrMuddHouse found Mary Spangler’s unmarked grave at Baltimore Cemetery as few years ago:
With a whole lot of research and some luck, we were able to locate the unmarked grave of Mary Spangler, wife of Edman Ned Spangler. According to an obituary, Mary died on July 24, 1864 "after a long and painful illness, which she bore with Christian fortitude and resignation."

#OTD June 20, 1865: Thomas Ewing presented his closing argument in defense of #EdmanSpangler. Ewing expertly discredited each part of the government’s flimsy case against the @fordstheatre carpenter whose only crime was having a poor choice of friends. https://t.co/RBRp4BfvTw

#OTD June 18, 1865: After guards noticed that #EdmanSpangler’s mind seemed to be wandering, the conspirators were examined by doctors Porter & Gray, who recommended they all be given outdoor time & reading material. Most of the conspirators got an hour of time in the prison yard.
