A survey undertaken by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), in collaboration with the Forest Department, along the #TamilNadu coast, has found that there are 158 #dugongs in Palk Bay and 112 dugongs in Gulf of Mannar.

#Dugongs also called “sea cows”—are rare marine mammals historically found in Sri Lankan waters, in the Gulf of Mannar & Palk Bay. However, sightings are extremely rare today due to habitat loss, hunting, and declining seagrass meadows.
Seagrasses store #carbon , stabilise sediments and provide refuge to a variety of commerical fishes. Without #seagrass, we won't have #dugongs in our waters. Conservation efforts are needed to prioritize #seagrass meadows just lik for rainforests or coral reefs.
