📊 @betsyladyzhets put together a great recap of her #DataforSciComm talk at #sciwri20, on data journalism for science writers https://t.co/cHUNQJqvAz
COVID-19 DATA DISPATCH: this week's issue provides a recap of my #SciWri20 session on data reporting for science writers (#DataForSciComm), a summary of the @COVID19Tracking antigen testing blog post, and an update on hospitalization data. https://t.co/rxINXjpTQ1
@ScienceWriters She needs no introduction from me at this point, but I had the fortune of mentoring @betsyladyzhets at AAAS a few years back. You may have seen her today leading #DataForSciComm #sciwri20 #sciwrimentoring
thank you to everyone who attended the data reporting session this morning, and to panelists @sarambsimon @duncangeere @cragcrest @jessicamalaty! I wasn't taking many notes because I was moderating, but I wanted to share the group's final recommendations: #DataForSciComm (1/4)
ALSO be really open about the strengths and weaknesses of your data and your analyses! Readers need to know what's going on behind the scenes to build trust (especially if, say, you're writing about COVID numbers and they keep changing). #SciWri20 #DataForSciComm
Another good tip: Don't pitch it as a dataset. Pitch it as a story that will be strengthened by data. #SciWri20 #DataForSciComm
One of my favorite tips is to collaborate with colleagues because if you have a weakness that is their strength, they may have a weakness that is yours. This is something I see a lot in my grad program! #SciWri20 #DataForSciComm
I joined the #SciWri20 #DataForSciComm session halfway through (morning meetings and such) but it was so worth it just for the panel Q&A session! Lots of good tips.
@duncangeere Adds @cragcrest: as a freelancer a per word rate might not be appropriate for a data story, given the work required. #DataForSciComm #SciWri20
Remind editors that data stories are often the biggest stories, says @duncangeere in the #DataForSciComm session at #SciWri20.
Update: Chart slightly updated.
In other news, @workbenchdata seems a lot like a few programs I used to use when I was analyzing my lab data. I like its straightforward and very clear process. Easy to scroll through and see what you did/tweak steps. #DataForSciComm #SciWri20

#DataForSciComm Don't write a data story without talking to the people who collected the data. ASK THEM about the limitations of the data -- because all datasets have limitations. Find out what they are before you present the data to the public #SciWri20
Everyone has such thoughtful answers but also WE GET TO PLAY WITH DATA YAYYYYY. Really enjoying listening to this convo while making a chart in @workbenchdata. I gave it @UW colors (b/c easy access to those hex codes). ❤️ #DataForSciComm #SciWri20

#SciWri20 #DataforSciComm Don't pitch a "data story," says @Sarambsimon. Pitch a story that's a good story, and it will be a better story because you have the data to back it up.
You are a better writer when you are transparent about all the limitations of your data. #SciWri20 #DataForSciComm
