Exclusive: The UMANG portal, used crores of times over the last couple months for hundreds of government services, has vulnerabilities that expose any user's details as long as they are logged in to a valid session, two researchers told The Hindu. Details: https://t.co/12dZSE71Fq

Meta has launched Muse Image, an AI image generator integrated into @instagram, @WhatsApp, and other @Meta platforms. Along with the usual image generation and editing features, it allows users to create AI-generated images/videos using content from public Instagram accounts, including profile pictures, by simply tagging the account in a prompt.
What is particularly concerning is that public accounts are opted in by default and that users are not notified when their content is used by others in Meta’s AI features.
This default opt-in model shifts the burden to users to actively protect their privacy, instead of requiring their explicit consent before their content can be used. It also raises concerns about informed consent, misuse of personal images, and the use of publicly shared content for AI-generated creations without prior notification.
Follow the steps below to opt out and protect your privacy. 👇

Privacy law experts have pointed to legal and privacy concerns in a pilot programme that @Meta has proposed to the Gujarat government to assist visually impaired citizens where Ray-Ban Meta glasses will be used.
Meta is currently facing a major class-action privacy lawsuit in the US and international regulatory scrutiny in the UK and Kenya regarding its Ray-Ban AI smart glasses. The lawsuit focuses on deceptive marketing and consented sharing of sensitive user footage.
A Meta spokesperson told @EconomicTimes, "Ray-Ban Meta glasses help you use AI, hands free, to answer questions about the world around you."
"Photos and videos are private to users. Humans review AI content to improve product performance, for which we get clear user consent," the spokesperson said.
Delhi-based advocate @apar1984, cofounder and director of digital rights advocacy group @internetfreedom Foundation told ET, "A visually impaired user wears these glasses through the whole of daily life, so the device captures their home, their routines, the people they meet and the documents they handle."
Data captured so a blind user can read a medicine label should never flow into AI model training or advertising, he said.
"Third party stores deserve particular scrutiny. By its own privacy policy, @BeMyEyes, an integration Meta has cited, records and stores video calls, photos and AI queries, which creates a separate repository of sensitive footage and a separate target for a breach," he explained.
Be My Eyes software is integrated directly into Ray-Ban Meta model. Users can say, "Hey Meta, Be My Eyes" to instantly connect hands-free with the Be My Eyes volunteer network.
Its privacy policy states that they record and store video calls, photos, and AI queries to enforce safety and improve their services. They offer data deletion requests.
San Francisco-based @MikeBuckleySF, chief executive, @BeMyEyes, told ET, "Globally, more than one million blind or low-vision users have signed up to Be My Eyes, supported by over 10 million volunteers. We operate in more than 180 countries and support more than 180 languages."
"This isn't our first work in India. We already see thousands of calls and many more AI-assisted sessions from India every year," he said.
When a user launches Be My Eyes through the glasses, those three-minutes live video calls to volunteers -- made mostly to help find things -- are separate from the photos and videos that users take with the AI glasses when they're not on a live call, he explained.
All data is processed and stored in the US. That is clearly disclosed to users and volunteers when they join the platform, and they consent to it, he said.
"There's no way to guarantee that a camera in a pair of glasses won't occasionally capture background people or information," Buckley said.
"We're not involved in evaluating data or annotating footage. We don't have teams of people sitting and reviewing user videos," he said.
"We retain data indefinitely, primarily for safety reasons," he added.
"A couple of times a year we receive abuse complaints, law enforcement requests or technical investigations related to older interactions. Retaining records helps us address those situations responsibly," he explained.
Akshayy Nanda, partner, @SarafPartners, told ET that AI glasses move everywhere their wearer goes, through homes, offices, hospitals, streets and shops, and the people nearby have no idea that their faces, voices or even the documents on their desks might be captured and sent to a cloud server for processing.
The government, working with Meta and deployment partners, should identify specific zones where recording should be restricted or prohibited altogether, such as hospitals, schools and voting areas, he said.

Today in "But why do you need Aadhaar for that?" — an AC rental service refused to go ahead without a copy of the Aadhaar. On asking why, he said "security." On asking what'll you with the database, he said, "aap mat lo phir AC." On asking what's the rule: "aisa hi hota hai."
Indian fintech EarlySalary pulled my credit report without permission. Never applied with them. Filed dispute + FIR. This is how data privacy dies in India.
Regulators & @RBI, where are you?

Hey @rapidobikeapp why are you selling my data to insurance companies?

Will they also be deleting all data they obtained via forced/coerced consent for all these years?
Paid “ad-free” is not the same as “data-free.” This study checks data exports from Instagram, Facebook, and X and finds ad-related data still shows up even on ad-free plans. Users expect less tracking, but many assume platforms collect just as much anyway

New investigation 🚨
Over 15,000 Form-7s in bulk were filed at Gujarat's Somnath seat to delete voters. Most of these voters are Muslims. Several form-7s were pre-filled, indicating an 'organised' attempt.
Cong won Somnath with just 922 votes in 2022.

UK's Ministry of Justice orders deletion of UK’s largest court reporting archive, citing "data protection" concerns. Court reporters are aghast.

Having used Courtsdesk basically every day, court reporting has been made far harder since HMCTS began to cut off records. Now they have closed it down entirely. Huge shame, and the lack of willingness to find a solution by Gov’t is disappointing.

Enforcing purpose limitation across a platform as large as Meta's is a complex task.
This talk by Meta software engineer Diana Marsala explores 3 early paradigms—dynamic propagation, unified policies, and centralized checks—and why we eventually had to rethink them for long-term scale.

If the Internet Archive gets paid for this by Google, copyright maximalists will spin it as a Big Tech company paying Internet Archive tons of money to engage in copyright infringement (not to mention violating the right to be forgotten in some cases).

So, Google is killing its cache (which was amazingly useful), and replacing it with a third-party solution of linking to the Internet Archive. I really hope the Internet Archive is being paid -- and paid a lot -- for this.

ENCOUNTERED A NEW SCAM!
My health insurance policy is due for renewal and yesterday i received a call from someone who claimed to be from @ICICILombard . The agent confirmed my details and also my policy details which matched. He then shared the premium quote which matched with the renewal notice i had already received in email days ago. I told him i was comparing quotes and would decide in a few days.
He then said that since i had not made a claim in over 5 years they can offer me a discount of 20% on the premium. I said fine, please send me a revised quote and he immediately sent me an email which looked official & had the renewal notice attached as well. He also sent me the payment link on Whatsapp.
The link to pay via payment gateway in the email was not working. Only the link to pay via UPI was working. This made me suspicious, and the UPI ID was also not seeming genuine. Then i saw the sender domain on the email and it was a parked domain 'https://t.co/Z1hfiucAGw' During this time the agent via WhatsApp kept following up, urging me to pay asap as the discount would expire. I told the fellow he's been found out and i know he's a scam artist.
Guys, please be aware of this scam. They have all your policy details somehow and anyone can trust them & pay up especially when you hear you are getting a discount on the premium. @cyberpoliceggm @ICICILombard
