“Wanted.” That was the status 19-year-old Rostyslav received from the occupation authorities the moment he stepped outside the gates of the maritime academy in Crimea. He carried no belongings and wore his uniform, appearing as if he were simply walking to a lecture in the next building. In reality, he was heading to meet Save Ukraine volunteers. His story, featured in a major @CNN report, is just the tip of the iceberg of how our "underground railroad" operates. While the world has spent years waiting for official return mechanisms to be established, we have been forced to build our own secret paths. The statistics are relentless: fewer than 25% of abducted children have returned home through official channels. The rest are the result of high-risk operations conducted by volunteer organizations in the shadows. They even tried to strip Rostyslav of his name by issuing him a new Russian birth certificate. The system wanted to "cement" his transformation into a Russian citizen and hold him as future mobilization fodder. I frequently speak with the children and teenagers we rescue, and I can say with certainty that this is not an isolated incident; it is part of a well-oiled indoctrination machine: Teenagers are taught to strip assault rifles and are prepared for service in the aggressor's army. Children are daily brainwashed with the idea that no one wants them in Ukraine and that only "Nazis" await them at home. The moment the Russians notice official interest in a child, they hide them even deeper or blackmail their relatives. This is precisely why we are forced to operate unofficially. Our team utilizes everything from OSINT investigations to tracking down families and children across various online platforms.
