@Soc_of_Authors I'm not sure I'd know how to describe it... almost seems to have a gothic horror element to it. But then, de la Mare was also a master of the macabre. #DeadGoodLit
@Soc_of_Authors I like: “And there beneath evening’s vacancy of twilight showed the transfigured scene of the garden, and near me, the anxious suffering face of this stranger” #DeadGoodLit
@Soc_of_Authors Angela Carter suggested that WdlM might be the only English surrealist and saw influences of French surrealism in MOAM #deadgoodlit
@1chae @Soc_of_Authors Yes! All my first interactions with flash were them being read aloud so I never think of collections as being flash fiction, just super short short stories. But of course, The Fish is classic flash. #DeadGoodLit
@Soc_of_Authors I always think of Ali Smith as being a bit of a poet - there's something about her books that means they read a bit like prose poems? I'm thinking of Hotel World in particular here #DeadGoodLit
@Soc_of_Authors Not so much of fairy tales, although there's something about its strangeness that reminded me of the flexible logic and architecture in Ishiguro's The Unconsoled. #DeadGoodLit
@ladymagnesia @Soc_of_Authors @Ladymagnesia No, but I imagine he has retained much of the darkness of the Grimm tales? I thought Memoirs was fairly benign until a certain point! #nospoilers #DeadGoodLit
@WilliamWootten Thumbelina is a great shout! And yes, signs of Carroll influence – I wonder where that puts Memoirs in the nonsense genre? #DeadGoodLit
Not a fairytale per se, but did anyone else read Mrs Pepperpot as a child? There's also some Pinocchio elements to it - there's darkness in both! #DeadGoodLit

I say yes, especially for its time. It reflects certain attitudes in the past, sure, but feminism evolves... right? #DeadGoodLit
@Soc_of_Authors Both are so similar in style, theme – seems strange to me that one is lauded and the other relatively unknown. I wonder why that is? #DeadGoodLit
