Dr. Susanne Lockhart has spent three decades exploring Southern Ocean science, including ~40 hours descending to the Antarctic seafloor in submersibles. Her work has helped identify and protect Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs), contributing to 77% of those formally registered under CCAMLR.
VMEs are slow-growing deep-sea communities built by corals, sponges, bryozoans, and other long-lived species that can persist for centuries. They are extremely sensitive to disturbance, especially bottom fishing.
In many cases, these ecosystems have only been recognized after fragile, long-lived species appear as bycatch in fishing gear. Dr. Lockhart is helping shift this approach. Through partnerships with tourism submersible operators, she supports non-invasive documentation that allows these habitats to be identified and understood before they are impacted.
On dive after dive, she witnesses soft corals swaying like underwater forests, giant sponges sheltering fish and eggs, and surreal gardens of color thriving in near-freezing darkness.
The Southern Ocean’s deep sea rivals tropical reefs in biodiversity, yet it lies hundreds of meters below the surface, largely unseen. These ecosystems are also sentinels of change, increasingly affected by warming, acidification, ice scouring, and industrial fishing pressure.
Dr. Lockhart’s work helps bring this hidden world into view, and into protection. 🌊
