Proud to see @aphrc represented at #DeepLearningIndaba2026 in Lagos, in an interactive session on AI evaluation for the social sector π³π¬
Really valuable to see participants testing a live chatbot to probe its strengths, weaknesses & failure modes, then unpacking how A/B testing shows whether AI products actually deliver value (not just perform well on paper).

Introducing Cohort 3 of our Compute Grant Programπ
At #DeepLearningIndaba2026, we were proud to announce Cohort 3 of the Compute Grant Programme, the Deep Learning Indaba Cohort, @DeepIndabaπ»
This cohort brings together 10 researchers working across healthcare, technology, agriculture, education, and climate & environment, with projects tackling some of the continentβs most pressing challenges.
From AI models that can support earlier detection of brain tumours and maternal health risks, to research enabling African language technologies, protecting wetlands through satellite and IoT data, strengthening IP discovery, and turning handwritten clinical records into usable data, the work is as diverse as the communities it aims to serve.
Together, the cohort represents:
πΉ 10 researchers
πΉ 8 countries across Africa
πΉ 10,584 GPU-hours of compute allocated
πΉ 63 GPU-weeks of computing capacity
And behind every GPU-hour is a research question with the potential to become something much bigger: a better diagnosis, a safer environment, more accessible technology, stronger African-language representation, or a solution built for the realities of African communities.
Compute should not be the barrier between a good idea and the breakthrough it could become.
Our Compute Grant Programme is powered by our technology partner, @CassavaTech, whose compute infrastructure helps make this work possible. Through this partnership, we are able to provide researchers across Africa with the computational resources they need to develop, test, and scale AI solutions addressing some of the continentβs most pressing challenges.
Weβre excited to support this next cohort of researchers as they turn compute into research, research into solutions, and solutions into impact.
πBig Congratulations and welcome to the Cohort 3!

How can we ensure AI solutions are adopted by their intended users?
At the ongoing #DeepLearningIndaba2026, held at @pau_nigeria in Lagos, #IamAPHRC's @agnes_kiragga shared insights from the Center's work, noting that Africa's AI sovereignty depends more on the maturity of data ecosystems and effective governance than on technology alone.
During the @wellcometrust hosted panel, "ππ§π§π¨π―πππ’π¨π§ ππ¨ ππ¦π©πππ: ππππ₯π’π§π ππππ₯ππ‘ ππ π’π§ πππ«π’ππ," Agnes cited examples of tools developed by Data Science Without Borders pathfinders including ππ ππ¨π°ππ«ππ - ππππ¨π«π ππ’π§π€ππ π ππ§π ππππ ππ§π¨π¦ππ₯π² πππππππ’π¨π§ ππ¨π¨π₯, ππ₯π¨π¨π πππ§π€ πππ§ππ ππ¦ππ§π ππ¨π¨π₯, ππ ππ§π‘ππ§πππ πππππ π©π₯ππππ¨π«π¦ ππ¨π« π§πππ’π¨π§ππ₯ π«ππ©π¨π«ππ’π§π , emphasizing the importance of collective benefit from AI innovations to help researchers, health institutions, and governments accelerate progress while advancing equity.
A central message from the session was that AI delivers impact only when people trust and use it. AI solutions must be accurate, safe, context-aware, accessible, and able to refer users to healthcare professionals when needed.
The discussion also emphasized:
β
building institutional capacity,
β
establishing clear regulatory frameworks,
β
securing sustainable financing,
β
fostering collaboration among governments, researchers, funders, and the private sector,
to achieve lasting impact beyond pilot projects.
