A hundred years ago, my great-grandfather Ernesto, an Italian stonemason who could barely read English, helped build the Cathedral of Saint Anthony of Padua in Wilmington. He left behind a wall that still stands, a company now in its fourth generation, and a question I have been chasing for most of my adult life. What did he know that we have forgotten? For the last two years I have been writing the answer. The book is called Pietra. It is a literary memoir of work, faith, and the kind of leadership that does not announce itself. One line from the manuscript, for those of you carrying something you cannot quite name: "The frustration you feel is not a defect. It is a signal." Over the next few months I will be moving the book through the publication process. I expect to share more later this year.
