The nation's Founding Fathers had been classically educated men with near knowledge of the religious wars of Europe as well as their own position before the British Monarchy which would not hold them and the developing wealth of the colonies in its grip. What remains today of their political enterprise has been for the time being boarded, commandeered, disarmed (bureaucratically), and plundered by a marauder.
Regarding first-rate political leadership of, by, and for the people: the talent pool for statesmen and competent, educated, experienced, sophisticated, and toughened advisors appears to me actually small compared to the general population of the nation; moreover, comparatively few adults have backgrounds, inclinations, funds, and time for coming up to speed on the present state of affairs. Information and street smarts are not the issue with the public--it's just that greater awareness, breadth, and insight are a necessary part of governance, or at least good governance, and the Trump Administration hasn't any of that.

Denial, a form of lie, may be used to cover a traumatic memory; framing, gaslighting, posturing may help project the image of a courageous-heroic undamaged and unassailable self. In such ways, #DonaldTrump and #VladimirPutin mirror one another. In lesser lives, banks and families take defensive measures. In feudal-medieval politics, archaic by modern standards, the same become parasitical in the way of pirates, murderers, and thieves. It takes the power of a better state to diminish the sources of their power--private systems of patronage--and get them our of business. The encouragement of strong individualism as part of the western liberal ethos may be a separate matters and healthier. Abraham Maslow comes to mind in relation to the "actualization" of the person in relation to intrinsic identity and motivation.
