As we @isd2047 work on the quest to nurture principled politicians, this year we are doing our #DemocracyExpress program in North East India, Guwahati, Bodoland, and Shillong. The cohort includes 26% identifying as Scheduled Tribe, 21% as Scheduled Caste, 28% as OBC, 37% religious minorities, 33% women and 1 person identifying as transgender. With a diverse cohort of 43 politicians from across the country, we start the learning experience from Guwahati on the banks of the Brahmaputra.
These constant co-voyaging experiences with people who are strengthening democracy at the local level give us a lot of hope. It also helps us understand the reality of the country and listen to the stories firsthand from the people who are experiencing it.
While we intertwine with the political reality, the constant quest is to delve deeper within and reshape our inner wiring. The cohort collectively reflected on their politics, who are the people they represent, took solo time on the banks of the Brahmaputra to identify their non-negotiable values, and inquired deeper into the intersectionality of their identities.
To understand the context of the region, we heard from two voices deeply rooted in the region’s realities: #KishoreKumarKalita, advocate and land-rights activist, and #LindaChhakchhuak, journalist and anthropologist documenting tribal societies and ecological stories of the Northeast.
Together, they opened up a powerful conversation on the region’s political complexity - from autonomy and identity movements to land, resource, and tribal rights that define everyday life. They also shared the cultural depth of indigenous communities and the ongoing struggle to protect heritage in a rapidly changing world.
As we conclude the Guwahati leg, we move to Bodoland, a region that has seen massive armed conflict for decades, and now is a decent example of how peaceful resolutions can be made.
