📸📰Allies Flood a Whole Island, Dutch Civilians Drown As a Result September 1944 – The Western Front of World War Two. The Allies are pushing deeper into Axis-controlled Europe, "liberating" Antwerp early in the month. But their supply lines were becoming too long and the German’s still controlled the estuary of the Scheldt river, meaning they could effectively block anything the Allies would try to send to Antwerp. At the core of German control of the estuary was the former island of Walcheren in Zeeland, the Netherlands. - On October 3, 1944, during the Battle of the Scheld, RAF Bomber Command began dropping bombs on the sea dikes of Walcheren. By October 17, three more such bombardments of Walcheren took place leading to an intentional, but uncontrolled flooding of the former island. - The initial bombing killed 152 civilians, and the flooding was extremely damaging. 9,200 cattle and 2,000 horses died and the soil was made infertile for years. Out of the 19,000 building in Walcheren, 15,000 were damaged in some capacity.
