#TechTuesday Researchers at IIT Madras have developed a solar-powered desalination system that converts seawater into drinking water without using fossil fuels - ideal for remote and coastal regions facing water scarcity.
Developed by Mr. Thilagan K, Dr. Advaith S, and Prof. Mani A from the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Lab, @iitmadras. The system uses solar thermal and PV energy and has been successfully deployed at Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari, drawing seawater from the Gulf of Mannar.
It includes:
A flash chamber and 4-effect evaporator (titanium tubes)
Condenser-ejector system
315 flat plate solar collectors (70°C)
20kW solar PV with battery backup
Offshore seawater intake system
A simulation model (TRNSYS-MATLAB) helped optimise the design. The system achieved 300 kg/hour distillate output and can run 24/7 with storage.
This indigenous, off-grid solution holds great promise for sustainable clean water access across India.
