Academic libraries have a recruitment & retention problem. Creating appealing policies & workspaces (even w/o budgets for full renos!) should be a top priority for libraries. We're already losing so many people to industry due to salary, toxic culture… #DesigningLibraries9

One panelist reflects on how her teenage boys want to work, comparing them to future employees. They want to be remote when they want to be & co-located when they want to be! They need to be convinced of - and internalize - the value. This is so spot-on. #DesigningLibraries9
Some libraries pressured by university admin to create in-person transactional spaces that replicate traditional reference/consult/advising structures but many users prefer meeting remotely. Strategically, makes sense to prioritize employee work community. #DesigningLibraries9
A focus in this panel on creating spaces where people WANT to be, which requires advocacy in the face of space scarcity & space repurposing by university admin in response hybrid work practices. Spaces that center employee well-being support retention. #DesigningLibraries9
Front-line library workers must be onsite, creating a have/have nots class system of who can access remote work. Inequalities btw faculty/staff can be deepened in unionized environments. How to create a culture that is vibrant, showing all workers are valued? #DesigningLibraries9
