#DesignOfTheWeek | The very first @Barbie doll from 1959 🖤
This doll was marketed as a 'Teen Age Fashion Model'. Her groomed appearance and glamorous accessories gave her an air of maturity, akin to prominent 1950s models such as Dovima and Dorian Leigh.
Nevertheless, her swinging ponytail, which came in blonde and brunette, ensured that she could be perceived as a teenager, since the hairstyle was associated with young actors like Sandra Dee.

#DesignOfTheWeek | The ‘House of Cards’ by Charles Eames sparked architectural creativity for all ages 🃏
Created in 1952, House of Cards was a unique toy designed to inspire, consisting of cards with six slits around the edges. This allowed them to be easily connected and built into various structures.
The House of Cards was available in two editions. The first set featured a variety of textures and colours, while the second set (shown here) included a collection of different photographs. When assembled, these cards come together to form a myriad of playful designs.

#DesignOfTheWeek | Superstar @Barbie (1977) is the doll that solidified the longstanding association between Barbie and the colour pink 💖
The doll represents Barbie's most dramatic redesign in a decade. Her voluminous blonde hair, reflecting the style of stars such as Farrah Fawcett, complements a sleek and sparkling pink dress that recalls eveningwear designed by Halston.

#DesignOfTheWeek | The MAgriTTA chair is the ultimate homage to surrealism 🍏
Created by painter Roberto Sebastian Matta in the 1970s, the chair is a playful tribute to the surrealist artist René Magritte, blending their names into one.
Drawing inspiration from Magritte's 1949 self-portrait ‘The Son of Man’, the chair is made up of a large black bowler hat which Matta reimagined into a physical chair. He crafted a fibreglass exterior with a green foam apple inside, transforming the design into a playful, unique seat.
This design was displayed as part of our #ObjectsOfDesire exhibition in 2022.

#DesignOfTheWeek | Malibu @Barbie doll (1971) is the epitome of 1970's California cool 😎
With her long, straight blonde hair and oversized lilac sunglasses, Malibu Barbie doll's appearance recalls the character of Marcia Brady from The Brady Bunch, which first aired in 1969.
Her tanned skin signified an aspirational outdoor lifestyle of surf, sand and sunshine.

#DesignOfTheWeek | A design story that goes from airplane sickness bag, to the ultimate luxury accessory... @Hermes_Paris iconic Birkin Bag 👜
In 1984, Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas had a chance encounter with actress Jane Birkin on a flight, who shared her need for a leather weekend bag.
Birkin drafted the preliminary sketch for the eventual Birkin bag on an airplane sickness bag, which led to Dumas’s idea for the creation of a chic new leather bag, suitable for everyday use.
Crafted from the finest leathers and assembled by skilled artisans, the bag has become a must-have for luxury fashion aficionados.

#DesignOfTheWeek | Celebrating the iconic cassette player that revolutionised the way we listen to music, the @sony Walkman 🎵
Sony co-founder Masaru Ibuka wanted to listen to music privately on long flights and created the TPS-L2, the first low-cost portable stereo.

#DesignOfTheWeek | The Red Blue Chair by Gerrit Rietveld is one of the most recognisable furniture designs of the twentieth century ❤️
The Dutch furniture designer and architect was born #onthisday in 1888, and his colour scheme of primary red, yellow, blue and black transforms the chair into a striking piece of art. His design blurs the lines between painting and sculpture, redefining what a household object can be.
