🚸Here is an example of how we use the idea of #desirepaths to inform our own designs.
Near Hero Honda Chowk, we saw a huge amount of traffic driving on the wrong side of the road in order to avoid a 10km long u-turn. Rather than burn so much extra fuel and time, vehicles would go the wrong way often resulting in head-on crashes. So, as a temporary measure, we set up cones in order to reduce crashes and fatalities.
We can watch the behaviour patterns of the people who actually use the road everyday to inform how we design and redesign roads rather than enforce top-down rules. We need to start designing our cities with its citizens in mind.
🔍We can use #desirepaths to inform how we design spaces.
With limited access to concrete when @michiganstateu was being first built, students walked across the grass, carving their own paths. These paths were eventually paved creating a web of paths with no right angles, following the quickest and most used tracks between buildings.
In the photo, we can see the well-worn desire paths later get paved over.
