The Devil's Dyke funicular in the north of Brighton (1897-1909) 🏴 🚞

It’s hard to imagine now, but Devil’s Dyke once had its own funicular railway.
From 1897, day-trippers could climb the steep hillside by rail rather than make the long walk up from Poynings, travelling in open carriages with little more than a piece of string between them and the drop. At the top waited an amusement park with a carousel, swing boats, shooting range and even slot machines.
The railway survived until around 1908–09. Today, only faint traces remain on the hillside — a remarkable reminder of just how different a day out at Devil’s Dyke could look more than a century ago.

A very odd looking car at #DevilsDyke this afternoon. Looked kind of home made and cobbled together. Maybe it was really a vintage Rolls Royce. But parking it had clearly been a challenge.
A grey grey misty afternoon atop #DevilsDyke @sdnpa @southeastNT and then we see these flashes of colour from some hang gliders. A little magic on a dull afternoon.
