More problems with rushed and poorly planned #FuelPassLK 2.0. If this is akin to a “trailer” for the much hyped and broader #DigitalizationLK, #lka govt really needs to reflect and learn. But is there any humility in GOSL technocratic circles for such introspection?
Despite repeated advisories from multiple state agencies, including SLCERT, it appears that little to no structured SEO work was undertaken for the official Fuel Pass website.
The unintended consequence is citizens searching for the platform via Google can easily be misdirected to look-alike or compromised sites. In an environment where phishing infrastructure can be spun up within minutes, it materially increases cyber risk.
More broadly, this points to a deeper issue. Digital literacy across the population remains uneven. While some users instinctively verify URLs and navigate directly to official domains, many others will simply “Google it.” That behavioural reality must be factored into public digital service design.

“Oops, we goofed” seems to have become the mantra of this #lka govt as well? First it was #CycloneDitwah, and now #FuelCrisisLK. Amateurism all around!! #DigitalizationLK suffers a major setback when public trust is ruined by hasty #FuelPassLk rollout.
Is this government so incompetent that they would ask people to start using a system overnight without even validating it, after it hadn’t been used for 4 years?
When validating the QR system, didn’t they identify even these basic issues?
1. How users log in if their phone number has changed.
2. Logging in with a reissued phone number.
3. How to generate a QR if a vehicle has had multiple previous owners.
4. How to generate a QR if the phone number used in 2022 is no longer in use.
5. What to do if the previous owner of the vehicle has passed away or moved abroad.
Is there not even a single person with basic IT systems knowledge advising this government?

If anyone wants to give any credit to anyone for developing the National Fuel Pass QR based system, it should be to Jayantha De Silva & his team at ICTA, Supun Weerasinghe & his team at Dialog Axiata, Shevan Goonathilake & his team at Millenium IT.
Their teams developed the platform within 2 weeks of our first meeting and rolled it out within a month at no cost to the government. It was implemented with the assistance & dedication of many more stakeholders.

Grudging #DigitalizationLK at work: automated immigration gates were opened at #Colombo Airport last wk claiming to “improve efficiency”. I arrived on Jan 31 & cleared thru such a gate - only to be told to join a line for human immigration officer who stamped my passport. After some deliberation, I'm pulling out of 1 of 2 #lka govt-tech AI works I'm involved in: the national language data + speech project. Government holds AI conferences and people go on stage to make promises, but those people aren't building shit.

As someone working on the govt AI stuff, I have to say that priorities are whack sometimes.
- electricity supply fails ~3-4 times a day unless you're on critical city grid; voltage fluctuations throughout
- internet sucks. Providers are certainly not held up to standards.
