Due to continuing inflation, exacerbated by cuts to #DiscretionarySupport and #DHPs. We pointed to media reports of increased shoplifting & crimes of despair as women struggle to feed their children. We pressed that addressing poverty should be a priority for every Dept.

Today I spoke with @nihecommunity regarding the withdrawal of #DiscretionarySupport . Niall advised me those with over 2 years will be withdrawn this week or next. For some reason mine has not? @C_Fitz_ @CommunitiesNI @GarethBurns18 . Time for action folks .

@CommunitiesNI is facing a punitive budget & decisions flowing from this fact will have huge impact on those least able to manage additional financial stresses coming from all directions. #DiscretionarySupport has been picking up these problems but will be less able to do so now.

Cuts to #DiscretionarySupport will impact on the help available for those waiting for their 1st payment of #UniversalCredit just as many thousands of people in NI migrate to UC @AdviceNI report last week showed people were worried how they would manage financially moving to UC
Siobhan from @WSN_NI highlights findings which show the disproportionate impact of the universal credit five week wait on women as the shock absorbers of poverty.
It seems inevitable the cuts will have an impact on the same groups who have already lost most. For DfC alone, support measures, incl the devolved #DiscretionarySupport fund, are being hit while NI specific #SocialSecurity mitigations proposals seem unlikely to be introduced 3/9
Meanwhile there are huge cuts proposed to the #DiscretionarySupport budget leaving many struggling with the essentials of life without any emergency help. These cuts have a huge impact on people & communities #poverty
