Born in 1038, #Hildegard of Bingen was sent by her parents to become an anchoress at the monastery of #Disibodenberg. She was later elected by the nuns to lead the convent, and would go on to record her #mystic visions in a work called Scivias, which took 10 years to complete. It was while managing a newly rebuilt convent at #Rupertsberg that #Hildegard developed her #UnknownLanguage and Letters. The language consists of 1,011 nouns. God, as the most important being in the cosmic hierarchy, is listed first, under the word "Aigonz", while the devil is "Diuueliz". Bees are "Sapiduz"; garlic is "Clarischil"; and there is even a word for beer mug: "Gunguliz".
The #UnknownLetters (litterae ignotae), meanwhile, consist of 23 symbols, each standing for a letter of the alphabet (j, v, and w are not included). Scholars still debate exactly why she created this unknown writing system, with some speculating that she thought the language came from heaven or that it was the fabled "Language of Adam".
