The visit of the newly appointed Commander of U.S. #Africa Command @USAfricaCommand, General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, to #Ethiopia yesterday sent Ethiopia's Prosperity Party and its online echo chamber into the usual frenzy — a customer flurry of exaggeration and easily debunked disinformation.
Abiy quickly posted his photo-op with the #AFRICOM Commander, claiming discussions on regional peace and security. Soon after, we saw pictures of General Anderson meeting with Field Marshal Berhanu Jula and other ENDF officials.
As soon as these pictures being circulated in Social Media, a wave of PP-linked social media accounts began circulating sensational, unverified claims — including quotes attributed to General Anderson and Berhanu Jula.
Among the most dubious examples was a post amplified by Addis Standard @addisstandard , quoting the General telling Berhanu Jula that the U.S. “supports Ethiopia’s efforts to secure access to the sea through peaceful means...,” and even adding that Ethiopia gaining access to the Red Sea would “significantly contribute to regional peace.” The posts further reported that General Anderson promised to lobby Washington @SecRubio @US_SrAdvisorAF on Ethiopia’s behalf.
These claims are highly suspect. AFRICOM never comments on territorial, diplomatic, or policy matters such as maritime claims (at least in the media). Their mandate is security cooperation, counterterrorism, and U.S. national security interests. Statements like the ones being circulated are completely fabricated for AFRICOM and would require official confirmation — which has not been given. It would be wise for AFRICOM or the U.S. Embassy @USEmbassyAddis to diplomatically distance themselves from these improbable remarks.
The far more likely scenario is straightforward: as the newly installed AFRICOM Commander, General Anderson is conducting routine regional visits, especially to countries facing heightened instability. Ethiopia is deeply embroiled in multiple internal conflicts, entangled in the crisis in Sudan, and its recent rhetoric on the Red Sea has raised international concern. These are precisely the issues AFRICOM monitors due to their implications for regional and maritime security.
His first visit, two months into his appointment, was to #Somalia — a country he described as strategically important due to its security landscape and geopolitical relevance. During that visit, he explicitly stated that he does not comment on policy matters and that his priority is safeguarding U.S. interests and regional stability.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa posted only two routine updates on its X account today: one on U.S. support for Ethiopia’s health sector, and another warning Ethiopians about the dangers of irregular migration. Nothing whatsoever about supporting Ethiopia’s Red Sea ambitions or the meeting by General Anderson.
All this makes one conclusion inescapable: PP is desperately trying to deflect from the severe internal and external crises it faces, resorting to its familiar mix of disinformation, distraction, and manufactured narratives to mislead its supporters and distort public perception.
This is not the first time Ethiopian media have misquoted U.S. officials to justify their unlawful push for sovereign maritime access. Just last year, Ethiopian outlets similarly misrepresented remarks made by the U.S. Ambassador.
