1) reduce contacts to the true minimum required
2) #DistanceHandwashMask
3) Zero tolerance for ‘maybe’ symptoms. Go home, book test.
Secondary attack rate measures transmission risk per-contact, so above suggests difference between groups spreading old and new variant isn't down to one group simply having more contacts. This is consistent with data from our recent pre-print (https://t.co/7OR6k5m2tF)
This is important.
“It must be safe if it’s open” is easy to think. But we have 10X the active cases we had 2 months ago, full ICUs, and you can’t tell by looking.

Spoke to a friend who's ill with Covid-19. She said she participated in all activities that her local gov reopened. Her words "it must be safe if it's open". We need to do a better job helping people understand risk levels. Local gov needs to do a better job protecting pop health

US #SARSCoV2 cases surging w/ record daily highs. A model estimates 3 mil infections. We simply can't test & trace our way out. We've never curbed a prevalent, highly infectious disease w/o good treatments or vaccines. Until a vaccine comes, the pop must engage in safe behavior.

@NIHDirector This is a modelling paper which illuminates potential, not strong evidence per se and findings in models have varied with assumptions. Masking is rarely the sole population intervention and may be weaker than others- so messaging should include all measures. #DistanceHandwashMask
I'd prioritize
- reduce # of contacts face to face to the MOST crucial-fulfilling (outdoor or large airspace, distanced, masks as advised) - aim for 1/3 of your usual # of contacts!
