A University of Otago study revealed that the negative impact of screen time on adolescent sleep – is not just about when it occurs before bed, but more specifically when screens are used in bed. The research, involving 85 adolescents showed that while nearly all participants engaged with screens before bedtime, it was the use of devices while in bed that significantly delayed sleep onset by about half an hour - and reduced overall sleep duration. Activities like gaming or using multiple devices simultaneously were particularly harmful. The authors suggest that current sleep guidelines might need updating to reflect modern behaviors. A proposed simple yet effective rule is - keep electronic devices out of the bedroom. This adjustment could potentially improve sleep quality among youth.
