The results of the referendum held in May to reduce the waiting time for a divorce are now fully in place.

Having considered the Family Law Bill 2019, the President has today, 25 October 2019, signed the Bill and it has accordingly become law.
#FamilyLawBill 2019 has passed all stages in the Oireachtas this evening and will now go on to @PresidentIRL to be signed into law 🙌 Reducing the waiting time from 4 to 2 years and relieving financial and emotional stress for separated people.

It is time this chamber stood up for separated people, and in the spirit of fairness, lessen a major unnecessary obstacle to beginning a new chapter in their lives following a marital breakdown.

The four year rule was a product of its time, a balm to get #divorceref across the line. It has not served many separating families well. Significant that the waiting time is to be reduced but not abolished entirely.

Minister @CharlieFlanagan published General Scheme of Family Law Bill 2019.
The bill will reduce minimum living apart period to 2 during the previous 3 yrs & address any impact a no-deal Brexit might have on recognition of UK divorces.
