Top Tweets for #DockerSlim

@DanielLockyer Very interesting that it took them so long to investigate :) I'd love to get my hands on an image that's 800GB. I created #DockerSlim (aka MinToolkit) to turn 2GB images into 100MB images and this would be a very cool challenge though this particular problem has an easy fix :)
Big thanks to @tktonic for the enhanced OpenAPI spec based probing in #DockerSlim (Mint)! It makes it easier to minify container images. Really appreciate the contribution.
Looking forward to my hands on KubeCon session in Atlanta next month Tuesday November 11! Join me even if you don't care about #DockerSlim :-) We'll get to learn about building AI assistant and MCP server capabilities in #Golang applications. We'll turn Ivan's Iximiuz Labs into Mint Containers Labs for this session, so it'll be easier to get started.
And for those who are lazy (I am :-)) you can use the 'debug' command in #DockerSlim (aka MinToolkit), which will do this for Podman, ContainerD, Kubernetes and Docker or use the dedicated 'cdebug' app Ivan created.
Run a Container in the Namespace of Another Container π§ββοΈ
While there might be no practical use for this in a regular Docker workflow, sharing namespaces between containers is a widely used technique employed by Kubernetes Pods and debugging tools.

Looking forward to #KubeCon / #CloudNativeCon in Atlanta & exploring/building integrated AI Assistant and MCP Server capabilities in #DockerSlim . Join the session even if you don't care about the project if you're curious about learning more about building AI Assistants and MCP Servers in #Golang :-)
Lots of people have been asking for the Podman container runtime support minifying images with #DockerSlim and it's finally coming! If you want to get a preview and try it before anybody else ping me
@PrateekJainDev By the way, the Brew team updated the brew formula, so now it's "brew install mintoolkit" to install #DockerSlim :-)
The architecture diagram DeepWiki/Devin generated for #DockerSlim is the best AI generated diagram so far (not complete, but it does make sense and it's useful enough)

Platform / DevOps engineers and even Devs often know a lot less about the applications they work with than I expected. This is one of the surprising learnings helping #DockerSlim / MinToolkit users. Enough application knowledge is key for pretty much every application maintenance activity out there (before & after it's deployed)
@omkizzy @evisdrenova Great blog post & a great use of strace! Nice job @omkuzzy ! #DockerSlim uses a similar source of telemetry among other things. The latest version is here (the SlimToolkit repo is ok too for shrinking images): https://t.co/OAO5D4iWS9
Excited to end 2024 for #DockerSlim on a high note making lazy loading containers approachable and introducing the ability to run containers anywhere (any local container runtime, many remote container runtimes). If you are interested in either DM/email/Discord/Slack(in CNCF)
Did you know that you can install #DockerSlim by running it? Once you download and unpack run "./mint app install" from the location where the directory where the binary is located (also don't forget about "mint app update" to update to the latest version.
Happy to do #DockerSlim demos (doing it at #KubeCon right now, stand 4B in the Project Pavilion) to show how to use it for more advanced apps that require extra flags. With the nginx container it looks like this: "mint slim nginx:latest". Note that you'll lose the shell, but you can use "mint debug" to get back the debugging DX
The new "imagebuild" command in the latest #DockerSlim release allows you to build container images using different build engines. In addition to the cloud-based https://t.co/aCBVlotsnI builds you can also use the Docker, Podman and BuildKit build engines.
Example building with https://t.co/aCBVlotsnI:
mint imagebuild --engine depot --engine-token your_depot_token --engine-namespace your_depot_project --dockerfile Dockerfile --context-dir . --runtime-load docker
Example building with Podman:
mint imagebuild --engine podman --image-name imagebuild-podman-app:latest --dockerfile Dockerfile --context-dir node_app
You can get the latest version here: https://t.co/b3eQ1Eh8Pd
The upcoming #DockerSlim release has a brand new "imagebuild" command where you can build with @depotdev Thanks a lot for your pointers on how to make it happen @kylegalbraith !
Example:
export DEPOT_TOKEN=your_token
export DEPOT_PROJECT_ID=your_project
mint imagebuild --engine depot --dockerfile Dockerfile --context-dir .
Ever wanted to understand the #DockerSlim code? Now there's a way using https://t.co/2j68AGwMYj It's a @StoriaAI Sage portal with a Perplexity-like UX to explore the project code. There's still more work to do, but it's super helpful already. Thanks to the @StoriaAI team and @juliarturc for setting this up!
Did you know that you can use the XRAY command in #DockerSlim with Podman/Buildah container images?
mint xray --runtime podman nginx:latest
If you are not running Podman Desktop on Macs you'll also need to make sure the Podman service is running and you'll need to pass its address:
podman system service --time=0 tcp://localhost:8899
mint --crt-connection tcp://localhost:8899 xray --runtime podman nginx:latest
DEBUG and IMAGES are other commands that also support Podman runtime (same --crt-connection flag requirements):
mint --quiet images --runtime podman
mint debug --runtime podman --target YOUR_CONTAINER_NAME_OR_ID

It was awesome to chat with @pabpereza again talking about #DockerSlim and a lot more. I'm glad we had technical difficulties with the original session because we got a chance to explore even more this time around :-) Thank you Pablo!
CloudNative SecurityCon is finally here! @mauilion and I will be talking about automating "Malicious Compliance" and hiding vulnerabilities from vulnerability scanners using #DockerSlim today at 1:55pm (room 433) - https://t.co/S3X6Gr8yjM #CNSCon #CloudNativeSecurityCon
