For ex, the pictographs for colours added to another sign turn it into sth else. So, "flower" + "black" = poison; a "man holding" + "yellow/gold" = to buy. A city is a square with 4 doors in the 4 main directions. It's a surprisingly efficient script.(2/3)

I just finished the #Dongbascript MOOC. It was even more interesting than I had expected! What strikes me is how easily I could guess and remember even abstract meanings and compound words once I knew the basic pictographs. (1/3)

Late post of my notes for week 5 of the #dongbascript MOOC! This week is about nature and the preservation efforts of Naxi culture and language. I must say, it's really nice and inspiring to see the efforts done for the preservation of those!

Today, I learned 8 family pictographs and 7 pronoun pictographs.
So interesting that dongba has both a DUAL "we" (L) and PLURAL "we" (R)!
