More for #DragonflyWeek23 from @RSPB_Strumpshaw yesterday - Brown Hawker, Ruddy Darter, Small Red-eyed Damsel and Norfolk Hawker. It really was quite a show.

Ended #DragonflyWeek23 on a high yesterday with a trip to @RSPB_Strumpshaw in perfect dragonfly-watching weather. At least 9 species, the highlights being Small red-eyed damselfly and this Norfolk Hawker (aka Green-eyed Hawker). @BDSdragonflies

Today we delved into #dragonflies & #damselflies in the Peak District ๐ ๐ชฐ #DragonflyWeek23.
Paul Richards, our expert tutor, guided us through local species & key identification features. We explored Haddon Hall's grounds & learnt how to gently handle these amazing insects for identification. Join us again at Haddon Hall later in the year.

Yesterday I went to @WiltsWildlife Ravensroost Wood to look for butterflies, but as it's #DragonflyWeek23 I could hardly ignore this Common Darter which posed so nicely for me.

Happy #DragonflyWeek23! ๐๐ชฐ
This is the exuvia of a dragonfly nymph ๐ฎโ
Exuvia is the dried-out exoskeleton left behind by a dragonfly nymph, which has emerged from its aquatic life and transformed into the beautiful aerial hunters that grace our skies.
Exuviae are very useful for species identification and recording as empty cases can be collected. With a closer look at its features, you can tell which dragonfly species emerged. It also shows which species have been breeding successfully in the area rather than just flying past. ๐
Learning how to identify exuviae is a great activity for anyone interested in wildlife identification. You can store the dried exuviae easily for identification at a later date, and if you have a pond in your garden, itโs a great chance to learn more about what lives there. ๐ก
Sign up for our course on the 24th of September, where you can learn how to identify larvae and exuviae https://t.co/9pgyk8ZRAA

To celebrate #DragonflyWeek23, some images from recent surveys of #Odonata at our site in Bickershaw with @LisaRoseJepson & @Lazuli27. Currently 8 species of #Dragonfly and 6 species of #Damselfy recorded here. A good site for Red-Eyed Damselfies. @BDSdragonflies

Our #WilderDoddington volunteers enjoyed a brilliant #dragonfly & damselfly workshop with @FionasWildLife @BDSdragonflies. After a fascinating talk on their origins, life cycle, habitat, feeding & how to interpret markings, we headed out to see what we could find #DragonflyWeek23
