#MythologyMonday 🧙‍♀️ 🎃Samhain eve, our table is set for a #DumbSupper, honoring the living and our departed ancestors and recent kin.💀 In silence, we remember heartfelt stories with grateful hearts.🙏🍽️ Soft flickering candles remind us that love transcends death. 🕯️🧡#Samhain

Bia Samhain agus An Suipéar Balbh - #Samhain Food and The #DumbSupper. As mentioned previously, the Irish Samhain festival originates from the Celtic Féile na Marbh feast of the dead, which was the 4th fire festival of the Celtic year. It is also a celebration of the second harvest of the Celtic year. The first being Lúghnasadh where grains and berries were harvested. On Samhain nuts and apples were traditionally harvested. It was even considered a taboo to eat Blackberries after November 1st as they now belonged to the Púca and it was said the Púca spits on them after Samhain. Food such as Cáca Anam (soul cakes) were made to eat and given out to mummer callers at the door. They were also left out as offerings for families Sinsear (ancestors), the Púca and the Sídhe (fairies). The tradition of eating Cál Ceannann, (Colcannon, "white-headed cabbage" in Irish), is an Irish dish of mashed potatoes with either kale or cabbage and sometimes with wild nettle. It was eaten before they went out as it was meant to help protect them from any evil spirits out that night. Bairín Breac (Barmbrack, “speckled loaf” in Irish), was also made by the bean an tí (lady of the house) and eaten on Samhain night. This is a type of traditional Irish fruit cake that was made with adding a coin, a ring and a rag into the mixture. With the purpose of divining the coming year for those who ate it. The coin represents a windfall in money, a ring, a marriage proposal and a rag for a rough year ahead. Animals such as pigs, bulls and poultry that were not breeding stock were traditionally slaughtered since Celtic times and both eaten at the communal feast around the bonfire or given as offerings to the Tuatha Dé Danann or left for the Aos Sí. An Suipéar Balbh (dumb supper), dumb referring to a silent supper, was held at midnight or dusk on Samhain night. Where a full meal was prepared and eaten backwards, meaning everything opposite such as cutlery and order of food eaten. With an extra meal set out for an ancestral spirit to join in. The door would be left unlocked or open as an invitation and sometimes guises were worn throughout, with only candles lighting the room. via Scoil Bhean Feasa FB
