๐ฆ And finally, Z is for... #Lizard!
Rare #SandLizards love bare sand in a dune system. They burrow in it and warm up by sunbathing on its surface.
By creating more bare sand in overgrown dunes, we give them more places to live! Thanks Julia from @nationaltrust #DunescapesAZ.
Y is for young people.
We are creating opportunities for young people to get involved in the project.
Whether you want to hands' on at your local site or help create community arts events inspired by the dunes; as Julia from @nationaltrust says, just get in touch! #DunescapesAZ
X marks the spot!
Dunes are a great place for #families. On our website, https://t.co/rPfbdnezLg you'll find loads of #activityideas for fun-filled days in the #dunes.
As Tish from @LincsWildlife says, why not look for treasure or create art from things you find? #DunescapesAZ
W is for war #history.
Did you know dunes have protected us during wars? On the #Sefton Coast, lights were put up on the dunes to prevent bombs being dropped on nearby towns.
The blowout that Nat from @DunesSefton is standing in was created by a bomb in #WW2! #DunescapesAZ
U is for us!
There's 200 people working on Dynamic Dunescapes, and not all of us get to call a #sanddune our office!
We're a partnership between @NaturalEngland @Love_plants @NatResWales @nationaltrust & @WildlifeTrusts, funded by @HeritageFundUK & @LIFEprogramme. #DunescapesAZ
P is for Pools.
Freshwater pools that form in dune slacks are the perfect home for rare #toads, newts and even orchids! Where scrub has grown in the slacks, we're removing it to improve the pools for wildlife.
Beautifully explained by Tish from @lincswildlifetrust #DunescapesAZ
๐ธ O is for orchid!
Between May and July a huge variety of beautiful orchids appear in our #sanddunes among the long grasses, and are a brilliant food source for #pollinators.
Thanks David @DunesWales @Love_plants #DunescapesAZ

Take a minute to hear from Plantlife's Rupert Hawley about why shifting sands are so important to sand dunes & their plant life. #DunescapesAZ @dynamicdunes
M is for marram grass.
Its long roots allow it to pop up when sand is blown on top, and its curled, waxy leaves keep it from losing too much water.
When the sand gets too stable we lose this grass, so we need to keep dunes dynamic!
Thanks Rupert from @Love_plants #DunescapesAZ

L is for #lichen.
Not all dune wildlife is easy to spot, some of the most interesting species are tiny. Thanks Jon from @CwallWildlife for finding the rare scrambled egg lichen - can you see how it got its name?
Here we've put up fences to stop it getting trampled #DunescapesAZ
K is for #kestrel!
This bird of prey can be seen soaring above many dunes, where they feed on small mammals, birds, worms and insects.
Their numbers are in decline so restoring dune biodiversity will support their population!
Thanks Tish from @lincswildlifetrust #DunescapesAZ
J is for jumping spider.
The tiny ant mimic jumping spider can be found in areas of the dunes where there's lots of bare sand and marram grass. Their large front eyes and ability to jump help them to catch their prey!
Thanks Andy from @CwallWildlife for this vid! #DunescapesAZ
H is for dune #heleborine!
This rare #orchid is specially adapted for life in #SandDunes and is only found in the UK. It can grow up to a metre tall and are best seen in the summer, when its yellow and pink #flowers are in bloom.
Thanks Eve from @cumbriawildlife #DunescapesAZ
G is for ground-nesting #birds!
#Skylark and meadow pipit often nest in the grassy tussocks on sand dunes. Keep to paths and keep an eye on your dogs in spring (nesting season!) to help protect these rare species.
Thanks Martin from @CwallWildlife for this clip! #DunescapesAZ
F is for foredunes!
Behind embryo dunes at the front of a #SandDune system, #foredunes are stabilised by #marram grass. Their open sandy areas are great for wildlife - in the summer you may spot sand lizards or beetles.
Thanks Julia from @nationaltrust #Studland. #DunescapesAZ
๐ธ E is for Epidalea calamita, aka the rare #NatterjackToad!
Toads live in dune slacks and lay eggs in the shallow ponds - perfect for tadpoles! Their loud mating calls can be heard up to 2km away.
Tish from @lincswildlifetrust was lucky to spot one this summer! #dunescapesAZ
D in the #DunescapesAZ is for Dynamic!
Many dune species are adapted to live in dynamic habitats, with bare sand that's free to move. Often #dunes are stable, overgrown with vegetation.
With our sister project in #Wales @TwyniByw, we're bringing natural dynamic processes back.
๐ฎ C is for cows.
#Cows are an important part of sand dune #conservation! By grazing the vegetation, they keep the habitat perfect for #wildflowers and rare plants to flourish. This supports the many insects that live in sand dunes.
Thanks Josh from @NorthDevonNT! #DunescapesAZ
๐ฆ B is for Butterflies!
#SandDune grassland is home to many species of wildflowers, which attract lots of different #butterflies!
In the spring #caterpillars can be found munching on many of these plants before emerging as adults.
Thanks Bev from @NorthDevonNT! #DunescapesAZ
๐ฑ A in the Dunescapes alphabet is for App!
We're creating a #CitizenScience app to help our volunteers gather data across our sites. This helps out site managers see how the wildlife is doing, and how well our #conservation work is going.
Thanks @DunescapesTim! #DunescapesAZ
