The Dunyvaig Castle Excavation is over for 2019! Missed the final conclusions? Head over to Facebook/archaeologygrrl to read all about the architecture, finds and surprises of this fantastic site. #islay #dunyvaigdig #uorfieldschool #archeology #adventure #castle #FridayFeeling

We're done! Tools are cleaned and dropped off in the barn and the staff are relieved and delighted to have got it done in time to get home for Ishbel's lasagne and chocolate cake before the students can eat it all up. #dunyvaigdig #ScotlandDigs2019

The team love getting muddy! Here are some faces from the last couple of days of backfilling in the rain. #dunyvaigdig #ScotlandDigs2019
Thank you @islayheritage for a fascinating end of dig presentation in Ramsay Hall tonight. Here’s to next year and hopefully funding for another #dunyvaigdig

Here's a selection of our friendly bus drivers and a jolly (?!?) pic of our students waiting with (varying levels) of enthusiasm in the wind and rain this morning for the bus to take them to site for the final push of backfilling the trenches #dunyvaigdig. #ScotlandDigs2019

Another special find! A singular piece of glass was found very close to the natural base of Trench 1b. Such finds can be very diagnostic and so can be great dating evidence. One of our team thinks it's from a high status goblet. #dunyvaigdig #ScotlandDigs2019

#dunyvaigdig please come to our closing event tomorrow night in Ramsay Hall, Port Ellen: https://t.co/zVC3fIFtHe. As well as a talk by Steve and a showing of the finds, there will be the debut performance of The Ballad of Dunyvaig!
Horizontal rain and wind cannot thwart us. We must persevere, with only a couple of days left at #dunyvaigdig #ScotlandDigs2019 #heroicfieldworkers. #Itismylot

A brooch from Dunyvaig? Today we found another very special find from Dunyvaig. We think it's part of a 17th century pennanular broch. It's a hugely exciting find
coming from within the building we have found in the Seagate. #ScotlandDigs2019 #dunyvaigdig

#dunyvaigdig here's #locallegend Beth Clarke. Always a sweet smile on her face, she has been digging with us for several seasons now. Just heading off to her family farm to collect our sediment samples, which have been drying in the lamb drier (used for warming newborn lambs).

End of week 2 site tour at #dunyvaigdig and we have a very exciting announcement from the seagate trench...we have stone steps!!! When Bunny @Archaeologygrrl trench supervisor realised this fact she squealed "STEPS!" In a pitch that only dogs could hear. #DigScotland2019

It's Victoria's 20th birthday in Trench 1b #dunyvaigdig. Meanwhile in the trench the deposit looks a bit like nutty chocolate cake mix but, but they have excavated the last of the midden containing lots of butchered bone, and are down to a levelling deposit pre-dating the wall.

We had a lovely visit from #Keillsprimary this morning at #dunyvaigdig. Sarah the photographer is rather envious of their colourful wet weather gear. Can one get adult sizes in glittery wellies and pink camo waterproofs? #DigScotland2019

Another coin from Roddy's trench yesterday #dunyvaigdig! We think it's the same as the other two. Charles I or 2nd, Scottish Turner, 17th century. #DigScotland2019

Exciting day on the #dunyvaigdig - just love the sense of wonder and curiosity that surrounds this quest to uncover the secrets of Islay’s past!
#dunyvaigdig #scotlanddigs2019 Zoe (finder of the Campbell seal last year) has found a carved bone point in trench 1. Could be Mesolithic!

And another exciting potentially Mesolithic find, this time by Duncan of #UHI at #dunyvaigdig. A blood stone blade. This stone is thought to come from a very localised seam of flint on the Isle of Rhum and was near an otter scatter at the seagate!

ere's another #locallegend Willie Currie, our nearest neighbour here at #dunyvaigdig. He greets us with a joke and a cheeky smile and lets us use his water tap for finds washing, sieving, and drinking. Look out for his shiny green haulage lorries trucking about the island.
