The fact that J.R.R. Tolkien felt the need to claim The Hobbit wasn’t written children is telling of how our culture sees children’s literature. Even more, I would argue the fact that we don’t respect children’s literature is telling of how we see and treat children. #ECL501
What I loved about The Hobbit was the transformation of Bilbo Baggins from a shy and uptight hobbit into a hero #ECL501
J.R.R. Tolkien was such an amazing author, invented several languages and a fantasy world in his stories that almost a 100 years later, people still love and continue to read his books #ECL501
I just have to say Mr. Birkway is truly the villain of Walk Two Moons for reading those kids journals aloud. This really is the worst nightmare of a thirteen year old girl- I certainly would have been running for the door. #ECL501

Charles Dodgson was interesting to learn about. His enjoyment in talking w/ children clearly influenced how he wrote for the better. You can tell that he understood that children (& people in general) need the chance to read for the sake of enjoyment & not just morals. #ecl501
reading Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is so much better than watching it. It asks the reader to connect w/ their childlike senses & look at the world in a dif. way. It reminds me of why I started reading when I was young & why I still enjoy it. #ecl501

Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts reminded me of something I got yelled at for as a kid: “yankee doodle went to town riding on a heater! Accidentally turned it on and barbecued his wiener!” #ECL501
I feel like what Rumpelstiltskin and the Witch from Hansel and Gretel have in common is pride as their downfall. The only reason the Witch dies is because she tries to prove a point to Gretel, and Rumpelstiltskin is so sure he’ll win that he ruins it all for himself #ECL501
Something that stood out to me in the tale of Hansel and Gretel was that it was the father who was depicted in a maternal light rather than the mother. Stereotypical gender roles were somewhat reversed, where it was the man who proved to be sensitive and caring. #ECL501
Little Riding Hood, Blue Beard, and Sleeping Beauty in Perrault fairytale were good to read. The way people used to live in the ancient time like the 17th century. The interesting thing is how the steward was able to trick and manipulate the evil queen #ECL501
