By the time the vaccine had fully rolled out in 2022 most of the ICU patients were vaccinated.
Prior to that unvaccinated patients were being fast tracked to ICU instead of the antibiotics they needed.

The vent was merely a consequence of the fact that the patients weren't treated for their pneumonia, so it got worse.
We have never seen such widespread neglect before. Hence "novel" event.
