@noha00114 All universities want there students to be best. A simple example for this is Computer Science students, in every semester they are taught with different computer languages. Now how will a student be best in all the languages. #eng105
@Dhairya15305203 You make a very valid point! Many skills that we need for the real world including filing our taxes are not taught to us. This makes us struggle and for a lot of people, feel discouraged once they leave the University environment. #eng105
@melany_zorrilla I love your solution regarding offering free food for those in need as the University does provide healthier food. I would say that handing out books for free is an option even now but with the cash incentives when giving back to the University, students don't do it. #eng105

A possible solution to this problem is making out of state and in-state prices much closer together in value. With the incoming funds being similar there are higher chances that college will give a more equal opportunity to everyone applying to college. #eng105

@muellerale @Millie81862608 @camila_b12_ @melany_zorrilla The question is to what degree is this a problem that can be addressed by reforming the university alone? Does altering this way of thinking require transforming society more broadly? But, then, where might we develop such alternative ways of thinking if not in the uni? #eng105
@camila_b12_ @melany_zorrilla American are so fascinated with gaining more and more money that even in a serious “crisis” the #1 thing American are concerned about is how are they going to make money. #eng105
@noha00114 I took this line in the context of certain teachers only to let us think a certain way so we conform to one way of thinking. For example, believing we won a certain war, so when we talk to someone else, we understand how ignorant our way of thinking once was #eng105

@Zach49736154 @Millie81862608 @NanaLin2019 Does he seem like someone who holds back his opinions in other contexts? The apologies he includes in several letters suggest otherwise. That said, the LORs do seem like an opportunity for him to vent, so to speak. But we might also ask who exactly is listening? #eng105
Annotation Module #9 is over! Please keep tweeting and be sure do two things for Monday: 1. suggest audiences for your classmates' social action papers and 2. watch "Starving the Beast" (https://t.co/0M3X9Hd9LD). #eng105
@bobbym21u @melany_zorrilla Perhaps he's trying to exert excessive amounts of control? He seems to be calculating in his approach to some of the letters, desperately trying to place Browles' in a position that would enhance his own status and preserve his program. #eng105
@muellerale @melany_zorrilla However, Jay is filled with frustration, regret, guilt, hope, and desperation. All of these emotions can be seen in a series of letters, which seems more realistic than the traditional narrator. #eng105
@muellerale @melany_zorrilla Throughout this novel, Jay is expressing his grievances against the world of academia through the medium of letters of recommendation. #eng105
@muellerale Honestly, without a LOR, there would be limited resources to see if someone is qualified for this scholarship. I believe that the lack of information alone can cause trouble when it comes to selecting a candidate. Him being the one to choose is a whole another issue. #eng105
@noha00114 @Millie81862608 Indeed! And what does this ultimately suggest? Why does the narrative develop in this way? #eng105
@bobbym21u I see this as a recognition that he was "using" Browles to get what he personally wanted and that his self-interested approach led to his failure to be a good teacher and mentor. This suggests that university teaching and professorial self-promotion are are odds. #eng105
@HuongLam001 I think his uncertainty about the "natural world" speaks to his lack of expertise - he's writing letters for positions that he does not understand, which suggests that these letters have limited power. #eng105
@Millie81862608 @NanaLin2019 Good point! But what kind of benefit is the protagonist getting from this? What does he get from writing these letters? #eng105
