How’s your French? These images are from Anne Lister’s French exercise book. Anne began the book in 1805 and ended it in 1812. As you can see from the handwriting her French wasn’t the only thing that improved.

During overseas service, it was helpful for soldiers to know the language basics of their allies and enemies. This German-French-English dictionary belonged to L Cpl White 1st Bt BW, a prisoner of war at Stalag XXB in Poland during WW2.
