🚨The Greens love lecturing everyone about ethics transparency and cleaning up politics. Yet here we are with their new Makerfield candidate Sarah Wakefield. She’s a Manchester City Councillor, the Executive Director of “Eating Better”, and a trustee of the Brian Mercer Trust which recently gave a £45k grant to Eating Better, the charity she runs! Surely this is a textbook conflict of loyalty and a pretty obvious financial one too. Her council role piles on even more layers with public money policy influence and local decisions that could overlap with her charity work. Was there proper recusal? Was there full public declaration? Did the Charity Commission demand clear documented management of this? Was the grant sufficiently scrutinised to ensure decisions were made without Sarah Wakefield’s involvement? Are there proper registers of interest? The Greens bang on about integrity and holding the powerful to account. Yet they pick a candidate with this many overlapping roles and don’t seem bothered by how bad it looks. Classic do as we say not as we do. Opposition parties need to shine a light on this before polling day. Hypocrisy like this erodes trust in all politics. Wake up Greens your standards should start at home.
