Abdelrahim Bouazza, Director General of Bank Al-Maghrib, revealed new developments in the "#EDirham" project, which #Morocco plans to adopt soon. Speaking at #GITEXAfrica in Marrakech, Bouazza mentioned that practical experiments have been conducted to assess the new currency's application. This marks the second project phase after completing retail payment process tests and evaluating the system's operation.
Since 2021, Bank Al-Maghrib has been studying the potential launch of a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) and how to manage it if officially adopted. The bank is considering a "hybrid approach" using both traditional and digital Dirhams initially to manage risks better.
The E-Dirham aims to reduce transaction times, improve financial system efficiency, and encourage innovation in financial services. It will help Bank Al-Maghrib execute monetary policy more effectively and transparently. Governor Abdellatif Jouahri announced that an internal committee is studying the CBDC's benefits and risks, focusing on crypto assets and their regulatory framework.
