October 13 is Moving Day. The date comes from a day that moved the course of Japan's capital. On this day in 1868 (the first year of Meiji), #EmperorMeiji entered #EdoCastle (today's #ImperialPalace) from the #KyotoImperialPalace. It was the grandest "move" in Japanese history.
The observance was established in 1989 (Heisei 1) by the Kanto Block of the #FederationofMovingSpecialtyCooperatives, to commemorate the block's 15th anniversary. It treats the Emperor's entry as the beginning of moving in the modern era. The federation is an association of moving transport companies founded in #Tokyo in 1974 (Showa 49). Its current name is the #NationalFederationofMovingSpecialtyCooperatives, and its headquarters are in #KandaKonyacho, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo.
Moving in those days was on an entirely different scale, in both size and splendor. The Emperor traveled from #Kyoto to Tokyo with several thousand people, and the procession is said to have been spectacular, with money and gifts distributed to the crowds along the road. With this move, Japan's capital shifted from Kyoto to Tokyo, an event known as #TokyoTento. Surprisingly, what was held to mark its 50th anniversary was Japan's first #Ekiden relay race, running from Kyoto to Tokyo. The ekiden as we know it today was born from the Emperor's move.
As of January 2019 (Heisei 31), the federation had 18 cooperatives, 136 companies, and 200 centers as members. Known for its #DovesLogo moving centers, it upholds the motto "Kind, Careful, Reassuring" and aims to provide consistently high-quality service nationwide.
