We’re delighted to share our Frame of Mind 2025 shortlist, where students and learners across Ireland explored the theme of gratitude and the everyday things that support their mental health and wellbeing.

I sympathise with the sentiment; increasing workload is a big issue for principals & colleagues but I'm not sure how individual principals can be empowered to respond. Virtually all the increased workload emanates from the DE that's where it must be tackled. #edshareie #edchatie

Teacher recruitment and retention crisis
Increased workload must be addressed

I suspect that the teacher supply crisis is not highlighted as that would involve criticism of the Minister & the Department. The 'insights' of Inspectors tend to be blinkered. #edchatie #edshareie
A dissemination event for the Inspectorate Report (2021-23) and Thematic Review was held with education stakeholders in the Department of Education today. The report is available at https://t.co/fK5x9YudB3

I doubt the same is what's needed here. Attractive terms & conditions of service incl permanent wholetime contracts & promotional opportunities , school leadership based on mutual trust and an end to the tick-box accountability system would be a good start. #edchatie #edshareie
@bflemingauthor When I took up 2nd headship in English RC State School I was given a full recruitment package incl. full moving expenses incl. solicitors fees, a furniture grant, travel expenses, temp accommodation, etc. same was available for certain other posts.
Sad news indeed. His insights are sorely needed today when so many, in Ireland and elsewhere, seem to think that a teacher can take classes in any subject irrespective of qualifications. #edchatie #edshareie
Very sad to learn today that Lee Shulman, who, among many huge accomplishments, invented the idea of pedagogical content knowledge, has just passed away. I fondly remember our sold-out joint dialogue with students & faculty at @HKUniversity in 2018. A great loss. @pasi_sahlberg
Yes, until we reform the DEIS Programme to focus more precisely on those most in need and resource it properly progress in closing the equity gap in Irish Education will continue at a snail's pace. #edchatie #edshareie
The class chasm between school-leavers across Dublin postcodes persists in 2024.

Yes, it was quite a limited largely desk-bound exercise as Judith Harford & I pointed out in an op-ed in the Irish Times https://t.co/43rWrxP4OJ It's a great pity as a robust independent evaluation of DEIS is long overdue in an effort to make our ed system equitable. #edshareie
I'm re-reading this months later and still can't make sense of the sample size. 4 DEIS schools were consulted by the OECD as part of this review. 4 out of the 1,193 DEIS schools in the country. That's 0.3%. In a review commissioned by the Min for Ed. #edchatie
For those interested in and concerned about Senior Cycle Reform as currently proposed, the article today by @Jessjcasey is compulsory reading. #edshareie #edchatie
https://t.co/41wB1VXiqt thoughts of Judith & me re party manifestos on tchr supply & DEIS. Little sign of serious plan to tackle supply issue, some grounds for cautious optimism on DEIS as one of its weaknesses is being acknowledged at long last. @carlobrien #edchatie #edshareie
Small scale study as the authors point out but it takes an unusual approach. It's well worth a read. #edchatie #edshareie
In my experience trust is the key both at school level and between schools and the Department of Education (sadly lacking in the case of the latter imo). #edchatie #edshareie

Really enjoyable piece. A point that jumped out for me was your love of subject. This is crucial to the teaching process. That is why the Department's approach 'anybody can teach anything' is doing a grace disservice to our younger citizens. #edchatie #edshareie
Looking for something to read over coffee this morning?
Something positive?
Well, read about why I love teaching.
Don't worry, it's not that long or too saccharine.

Thanks to @fotoole for his observations on the op-ed @JudithHarford and I wrote re the OECD study of the DEIS programme and its deficiencies. Someday, an Irish govt will tackle educational disadvantage and area based poverty in a serious and robust manner. #edchatie #edshareie
Colleagues @judithharford and @bflemingauthor cited in today's @IrishTimes by @fotoole in relation to their recent article on the OECD review of the DEIS programme. https://t.co/h0oEJOBiQ5
Absolute nonsense and insulting at that particularly on World Teachers' Day. When you're in a hole it's best to stop digging. Maybe @NormaFoleyTD1 should lock her shovel in an electronic pouch. #edchatie #edshareie
My op-ed today in @thejournal_ie about why I am providing funding to secondary schools for mobile phone pouches or other storage solutions so that students are no longer glued to their phones during the school day.

The Unit set up in the Dept of An Taoiseach to tackle Child Poverty can bring about serious improvement but not if it's merely a co-ordinating body as it seems to be at present, admittedly it's early days. @SeeryKearney #edchatie #edshareie
Senator @SeeryKearney @FineGael emphasises the importance of a multi-faceted response to address child poverty including resourcing the Child Poverty and Well-being Unit to ensure children’s needs are met and everything is done by Govt is ‘child-poverty proofed’

Yes, I have met a few recently. It's an interesting 'bonus' arising from the teacher supply crisis. Those working in unhappy or even toxic schools find it easy to move, far easier than in previous generations. #edchatie #edshareie
Met a young teacher on the bus yesterday. She takes 2 buses to work now but is happy to have left her previous (within walking distant) school. She cites, fairness, inclusion, recognition , encouragement & fun as replacing favouritism, isolation and stress.
A fine op-ed on the teacher supply crisis from a school principal. unfortunately, the Minister for Education is more focussed on PR opportunities. #edchatie #edshareie
Adolescents get one chance of a creative, dynamic education, currently denied. It is now an emergency. Bold action is needed: A Dublin principal on the capital’s teacher shortage

In abdicating responsibility for the teacher supply crisis the @Education_Ire and @NormaFoleyTD1 are doing a grave disservice to students insulting the teacher profession. #edchatie #edshareie
“The cosmetic measures announced to date by the department have fallen far short of what is required, and as a result students in many schools continue to have less access to the full range of subjects
