Yesterday we covered what a traditional futures contract is since we are gearing up for @elys_network Perpetual Futures on the #ElysDex. π€
But what are Perpetual Futures? π€
With traditional futures contracts you have what is called a maturity date. At the time of maturity whoever hodls the contract must then take ownership of the underlying commodity. (I've actually read horror stories of people who forgot to sell their futures contract and have to take ownership of 15,000+ eggs, hilarious π₯)
With Perpetual Futures there is no maturity date. Allowing users to trade long or short on an underlying assets potential future value. You're more or less trading a derivative of the underlying asset.
Alright, well, why Clan?
Leverage. Leverage is why. Leverage is taking out a loan with contract issuers in order to maximize potential profits, or losses, kek.
Leverage is that temptress with her siren call forever beckoning you in the night. "Come over, let's watch Netflix, I have brownies and beer." Every crypto bros dream. Begone whench.
Leverage allows you to multiply your spot positions size, 5x, 10x 25x etc. Obviously this can greatly increase ones potential for worth while profits.
But why the contracts instead of just buying with leverage on spot?
Manufactured excessive volatility. With trading a derivative of an underlying asset you move that extra volatility away from the real assets market and into its own market.
Allowing the underlying asset to remain in a state of homeostasis with its own markets demands and not be swayed one way or another with massive leverage. Leverage can certainly have huge effects on a market especially when small.
Now, keep in mind there are some other functions that are introduced with futures and leverage that do not apply to spot.
The main one?
Liquidation. Liquidation is when your position gets to a point where your loss is so large that the protocol forces the closure of your position, remember you took out a loan, and your loss is then realized.
This of course doesn't happen with spot trades as you can just diamond hand your position to the deepest depths of Mordor.
With futures the more leverage you take the less in the negative your position can go. 5x leverage, maybe 20% down before you're liquidated. 10x leverage, 10% and you get liquidated. 20x leverage, well you better be right buddy because your prone to liquidation if you're off by even a slight amount.
This of course is both bad and good, because with short positions you have the potential for infinite losses, so it's sort of a safety net.
Now you'll never owe back money on the loan, they'll just liquidated your position before you're actually anywhere near losing their money, I believe when I've played with leverage my worst liquidation was around 50% of my spot position. So if the position was 100usd, when I got liquidated I lost 50usd. Safety net.
Alright, I could go deeper and deeper into how this whole mechanism works, how losers pay winners, the funding mechanism, etc etc.
But this isn't a futures for dummies book and perhaps I covered enough here to allow the average user a better grasp on just what Perpetual Futures are, why they are, and how they work.
Good luck, anon.
Clan out π±
