Important point about #emvote. Irish abroad can be profoundly affected by policy decisions at home. While the wealthy and powerful among them will still be courted by politicians, perspectives of marginalized are lost.

I'd like to address a myth surrounding the upcoming referendum on voting rights.
There's appox 3.6 million Irish citizens living abroad.
Some claim these citizens are primarily "Irish Americans", "People who have never visited Ireland", "Far rights" who will flood the vote 1/
To claim that the hundreds of thousands of Irish citizens who had to leave during the recession "voted with their feet" shows a profound misunderstanding of Ireland's history of emigration -- and a misunderstanding of our deep connections to home.
