At 5:14 a.m., when all 9 banger boats left the harbor, the sea was a little choppy and quite hazy, but the sky subsequently cleared, and temperatures in Taiji reached 31°C. Furthermore, because humidity in Japan is very high, the climate remains harsh during this period.
Just as 3 hours had passed, Kunito spotted several banger boats suddenly changing course, so he moved from Tomyozaki to Takababe Hill in the Cove and confirmed that it was a large pod of Bottlenose dolphins. The hunters initially appeared to have combined 2 pods into 1 before driving them into the Cove.
After he confirmed this, Kunito — who had been feeling unwell for several days leading up to the hunting season—suddenly became unable to move. Suspecting heatstroke, the live was interrupted.
Based on what he saw during the brief livestream, he and I estimated the pod to be around 50–60 dolphins, but according to a local media report released that afternoon, the number was 200. That was likely the hunters’ estimate; the pod was larger than expected.
Kunito saw at least one calf.
While he paused the Live to rest but continued monitoring, and captive selection began. At first, 4 dolphins were taken to the harbor pens.
After confirming that much, his physical condition reached its limit, so he asked an experienced activist who was in Taiji to keep him updated on subsequent developments and reluctantly returned home.
After the first 4 captives, 7 more were captured. 2 captives at a time were taken to the harbor pens, and the last 3 were taken toward the Moriura Bay.
Then, around 5 p.m., the hunters set up floodlights at the Cove. Until tomorrow, this large pod will remain confined within the narrow, shallow nets, and starting tomorrow morning, they will once again be subjected to the brutal selection process.
It is not uncommon for dolphins — physically and mentally weakened by the fear and exhaustion of being driven into the Cove and the grueling selection process carried out by divers — to be found floating on the surface the following morning. We must never forget that this is one aspect that illustrates the horrific reality of this dolphin hunt.

ちょうど3時間が経った頃、急に向きを変えた数隻の猟船が見えたためクニト氏は燈明崎からコーヴの丘タカバベへ究極移動し、大きなバンドウイルカの群れであることを確認。猟師たちは、初め2つの群れを1つにまとめて追い込んだようだ。
そこまで確認したところで、猟期数日前から体調を崩していたクニト氏が突然動けなくなった。熱中症と思われライブは中断。
短いライブの間に見えた群れは50-60頭ほどかと推測したが、午後に出たローカルメディアの報道によると200頭とのこと。それは猟師らの見立てだろう、予想より大きな群れだった。
少なくとも1頭の子どもをクニト氏は見た。
彼がライブを止めて休息を取りながら監視を続けている間に、選別が始まった。最初に4頭が港の生け簀へ運ばれた。
そこまで確認した後に彼の体調の限界となり、太地入りしていた経験ある活動家にその後の情報を知らせてくれるよう依頼し、やむなく帰宅。
最初の4頭に続いて捕獲されたのは7頭。2頭、2頭が相次いで港の生け簀へ、最後の3頭は森浦方面へ運ばれた。
そして17時頃、猟師たちは投光器を設置。明日までこの大きな群れは、狭くて浅い網の中に閉じ込められたまま留め置かれ、明朝から再び手荒い選別作業を経験することになる。
コーヴへ追い込まれた恐怖と疲労、ダイバーに追い回される手荒い選別により、心身の弱ったイルカが翌朝浮かんで見つかることもしばしば。それがこのイルカ猟の悲惨さを物語る一面であることを決して忘れてはならない。
