CHART OF THE DAY: Global coal demand rose to an all-time high in 2025, up 0.5% y-on-y to 8,845 million tons (also, @IEA revised up 2024).
Now, IEA says 2025 will mark a peak, with consumption dropping over the next 5 years. Time will tell, but previous peak forecast were off.
Indeed, what we're seeing is primarily an #EnergyAddition, despite the significant relative growth of solar and wind energy. Note that, according to the Energy Institute's methodology, fossil fuels account for 86.6% of the energy mix, compared to the substitution methodology used by Our World in Data.

The so-called energy transition is better described as an #EnergyAddition.
Over the past decade, wind and solar energy have grown from 0.6% to 2.8% of the global energy mix, yet they accounted for only 19% of the increase in total energy consumption.
In contrast, fossil fuels contributed 67% to the rise in primary energy use and their share of total energy mix is still high; 86.6% in 2024, down from 90.3% in 1990!
Moreover, the share of oil and gas in the global energy mix has slightly increased since 2014, reaching 58.7%.
The so-called energy transition is better described as an #EnergyAddition.
