Kicking off a study of the post-Spring Break slump in student engagement today! How can we keep the kids involved in learning in this “new normal” when summer is right around the corner? @NorthForestHigh @TeamHISD @HisdAcademics @Education_ID @abr284 @PearDeck #EngagementChat
Hello #EngagementChat. We are sorry for the late notice, but we are updating @EngagementChat. We will be back in a few weeks, but until then, please look out for polls that we post to give us feedback for improvements!

A4: Once Ts have an understanding of their biases, they can consciously act on them by creating an accepting & empowering classroom culture, seeking out Ss they’d previously negatively label & build relationships w/them, & be aware of their words & interactions #EngagementChat https://t.co/uVUe1keU2b
Q4: How can having an understanding of the biases one carries as an educator serve as a catalyst to strengthen and further develop relationships with students? #EngagementChat

Thank you to all who participated and for those who are just reading. We hope #EngagementChat, and our amazing educators who participate, make a difference for you, as an educator, each week!

A4: I go back to the, admitting you have a problem is the first step of progress. Having an understanding of your educator biases can strengthen your relationship with ss by having more of an understanding mentality toward the student. #engagementchat https://t.co/0bBqQ1Z8sx

Q4: How can having an understanding of the biases one carries as an educator serve as a catalyst to strengthen and further develop relationships with students? #EngagementChat

A4: Recognizing that most (more like all) of us carry biases of some sort, helps make those biases not manifest themselves into action that affect students. It's a certain first step and a HUGE one at that. #EngagementChat
Offer implicit bias training as PD. Talk about race especially if it makes you uncomfortable. Teach staff & kids about the school to prison pipeline & collectively decide how to help them avoid it. Use restorative justice to see perspective of the punished kids... #EngagementChat https://t.co/Fzg0UyRrWy

Q3: As we work on tearing down implicit racial bias in schools, what implications does it currently have in the work we design for students? #EngagementChat

A3: Curriculum matters as does ensuring high expectations for all students.
And in 2018, we need to eliminate content that is completely unacceptable https://t.co/mzfwFxWuDC #EngagementChat
This is absolutely unacceptable. A @GreatHeartsTX charter school in San Antonio asked students to complete a “balanced view” assignment about slavery, requiring them to list the “positive aspects” of slave life. The teacher worked from a @pearson textbook.

A3: All if this goes back to knowing your who, your students. The stronger your relationship with them & the more you understand the motives they bring to school, the better designed work you can provide. That's why I am an advocate of @SchlechtyCenter frameworks #EngagementChat
