No sé que posibilidades tiene el Sr. James Fishback de ganar la gobernación de Florida. Él es pre candidato republicano a ese cargo. Pero es importante que se sepa que Mr. Fishback propone revocar las licencias de conducción de aquellos floridanos que no hayan aprobado los exámenes necesarios en INGLÉS. Así mismo. If you don´t speak English, you don´t get to drive in the Sunshine State. Esa es su propuesta. Por cierto, la mamá del Sr. Fishback es colombiana. Quizás él habla español. Voy a tratar de entrevistarlo en la radio.

Acaban de estrenar una obra teatral en Miami Beach que se llama #EnglishOnly. Está basada en el triste episodio ocurrido en 1980 cuando los votantes de lo que se llamaba entonces Dade County aprobaron una infame ordenanza que prácticamente prohibía el uso del español en los tramites oficiales del condado. Aquello fue para castigar a la comunidad cubana. Para humillar a los cubanos. Ocurrió poco después del éxodo del Mariel. Afortunadamente, la vil ordenanza fue derogada. Yo no suelo ir a Miami Beach. Me asusta el tráfico de la ´´Playa.´´ Me horroriza lo que cobran por el estacionamiento. Pero voy a ir a ver esta obra en el Colony Theater. Me alegra que en el teatro se presente una obra que nos haga recordar un episodio tan amargo que muchos olvidaron y muchos más desconocen.

Interesante este tema sobre que del 6 de febrero en adelante los exámenes para la obtención de licencias de conducir en Florida serán administrados exclusivamente en inglés. Es algo así como ´´Back to the Future.´´ Me hace recordar como en 1980 los votantes del entonces Condado Dade, hoy Miami Dade, aprobaron en un referendum una medida que establecía el inglés como único idioma oficial del condado. La ordenanza de English Only fue posteriormente anulada. Yo conozco gente, alguna que lleva décadas acá, que si tienen que aprobar un examen en inglés de cualquier naturaleza lo fallan. No me parecería justo que perdieran algo tan necesario como sus licencias de conducción. Pienso que probablemente no será así. Dudo que este nuevo reglamento tenga carácter retroactivo. Pero sí me parece irónico que muchos de esos conocidos míos que no hablan inglés a pesar de llevar mucho tiempo en este país son ´´comecandelas´´ en el tema de la inmigración. Por otra parte, conozco otras personas recién llegadas que tienen una situación migratoria irregular que han aprendido inglés rapidamente. El mundo se hace cada vez más confuso y lleno de contradicciones e incoherencias.
