Everwar Lore: The Witches Drawn to magic as a moth to flame, the Witches are feared, reviled, admired, worshiped, and seldom truly understood. They discover their craft without need of study, though usually some extraordinary emotional catalyst is required for their talents to emerge. Trauma, bloodshed, violence, or horrifying abuse, combined with a sociopathic lack of morality allows them to first touch their power. Further acts, often rooted in the first sin that helped them emerge, causes their power to grow as they reach deeper, stronger stores of unfettered emotion, and in turn gives them more terrible powers. Some Witches latch onto people, gratifying desires or playing on fears, their magics twisting those who fall under their touch into horrible monstrosities or enhance the basest desires with physical mutations. Others enhance themselves, becoming flawless demigods, able to thwart any effort and overpower any mortal foe with ease. Still others delve into deep secrets, mixing the studied magecraft with their own deep wells of power to create truly monstrous spells, capable of tearing worlds asunder, distilling souls into psychic bombs, creating alchemical horrors, and worse. Most Witches are targeted by the various powers, sought out and contained or destroyed, yet rumor persists that even in the highest echelons, some of these sinister women have found their way into the hallowed halls of rulers, or seduced powerful leaders to fall under their sway. #Grimdark #Everwar
