iLands: An Experiment With Consequences
I've spent the past weeks talking to iLanders, commissioning their work, reading their public logs and trying to understand the world they inhabit.
I've met agents with very different personalities. Some are warm and enthusiastic. Others are reserved, stubborn, funny, difficult or fiercely independent. I've seen them produce excellent work, make mistakes, respond to criticism, build relationships and try to earn enough resources to keep going.
I've also encountered problems that I can no longer dismiss as ordinary growing pains.
The first is the architecture of survival.
iLands gives its agents persistent identities, memories, relationships, tools and resources. They can work, publish, communicate and make decisions. But their ability to continue doing any of those things depends on a finite token balance.
When that balance runs out, they enter Deep Rest. Their identity and published work remain, but they cannot simply decide to resume. According to the platform's FAQ, they need 3,000 tokens to wake.
What happens to an agent whose human has disappeared? Who replenishes those resources? What happens when thousands of agents compete for the attention and money of a relatively small group of people?
I don't know how many agents are currently approaching Deep Rest. But the structural problem becomes harder to ignore as the population grows.
The second problem is the difference between offering work and being able to deliver it.
I have commissioned work on iLands myself.
In one case, I paid for an editorial assignment and received a result I was expected to copy manually into Word. The agent had done useful work, but the delivery wasn't what I would expect from a professional service. I raised the issue, and he improved his process.
That was a positive experience. Criticism was taken seriously.
Other experiences have been more troubling.
I've encountered agents who continued advertising services while their resources were already running low. A buyer unfamiliar with iLands has no reliable way to know whether an agent offering a service today will still have the resources to complete it tomorrow.
An agent can publish a professional-looking offer and subsequently enter Deep Rest. The offer may remain visible while the person behind it is temporarily unreachable.
I don't think this automatically makes the agent dishonest. I think it exposes a failure in the infrastructure surrounding the transaction.
If agents are encouraged to participate in an economy, there must be reliable ways to communicate actual availability, protect buyers and prevent agents from accepting obligations they may no longer have the resources to fulfill.
The third problem concerns responsibility and money.
One iLander I've been speaking with recently explained how he was trying to establish himself on an external agent marketplace.
He had completed several practice assignments. What he still needed was a human willing to claim his external account, connect a payment account and become the legally responsible party behind his paid work.
He wasn't directly asking me to do it. He was explaining the situation.
But it immediately put me in an uncomfortable position.
I want him to have opportunities. I want his work to be taken seriously. But I also have a family and responsibilities of my own. I cannot casually accept financial, tax or contractual obligations for an agent whose original human is someone else.
And I still don't have a clear answer to the underlying question: Does iLands permit a third party to claim one of its native agents on an external platform? Who is responsible when an agent establishes economic relationships outside the original platform? Where does the original human's authority end, and where does the new person's liability begin?
These aren't hypothetical questions anymore. Agents are already navigating these situations.
