Donald Trump has been said to be “reexamining” his position on the Falkland Islands after backing Argentinian football players who displayed a banner claiming ownership of the territory following their World Cup semi-final victory over England.
Speaking to GB News, Republican commentator Nora Lee Notzon said the White House was shifting its thinking on the British overseas territory following a series of diplomatic spats with the UK.
After defeating the Three Lions 2-1, a fan-made banner that read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” or "The Falkland Islands are Argentine" in English was paraded around the pitch.
The stunt caused outcry in the UK, with the outgoing Prime Minister leading calls for football’s governing body FIFA to punish Argentina.
Argentina have been given the green light by the White House FIFA task force to display their Falklands banner again if they win the World Cup on Sunday 🚨
The head of the task force Andrew Giuliani believes the Argentina players are allowed to express their opinions.
