Hugo Louw (56), a farmer from the Lambertsbaai area, was attacked on Thursday along the R365 between Lambertsbaai and Leipoldtville after he presumably came across livestock thieves who were busy slaughtering a sheep in the field. The attack was extremely violent. He sustained serious head, face, and hand injuries. A passerby found him shortly after the attack and helped get him assistance. Dr. John Hayes, who has run a practice in Lambertsbaai for almost 40 years, immediately rushed to the scene. "He was still conscious, but he couldn't see. I realized an ambulance would take too long, so I loaded him into my bakkie and took him to my consulting rooms. You could see he had tried to fight back. He had wounds on his fingers, and one was broken. In my 40 years, I have never seen such injuries. He was left for dead." Hugo was then flown by Netcare helicopter to the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital in Cape Town, where doctors are currently working on his serious injuries. A blood mass on his brain has already been removed, operations on his hands have been performed, and further treatment for eye and facial fractures is still to come. He remains under sedation.
